San Francisco – home of the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, the most famous car chase in movie history (no not The Fast & The Furious) and, apparently, more dogs than children!

This was the venue for the 2017 ITM Conference, with a record number of 250 attendees travelling to the City by the Bay to experience the many attractions the area has to offer.

Summer here is a bit of an enigma. Indeed, as Mark Twain once said: “The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco.”

While we hardy Kiwis were happy with 15°C being a distinct step upwards from home, the fog that regularly engulfs the city until early afternoon was interesting.

The first evening saw delegates attend a welcome function at the historic Ferry Building sponsored by the silver sponsors.

Departing CEO, Scott Duncan, welcomed members and suppliers alike to what was to be a week of building and cementing partnerships and friendships.

A tasty array of Asian, Mexican and Spanish morsels was on offer, reflecting the multi-culturalism of the host city.

ITM members attended the annual ASM on the Monday morning to celebrate the year’s achievements and with plenty to discuss during this transitional period.

The Gold Sponsor evening saw attendees taking a brief walk to AT&T Park and what was for many a first experience of baseball. The San Francisco Giants took on world champions the Chicago Cubs, who prevailed 5-3.

The optional tours hosted by the Bronze Sponsors on the Tuesday saw groups taking city tram (“cable car”) tours, sailing on the harbour, tasting local delights on a culinary tour, and cycling the Golden Gate Bridge before everyone caught a ferry out to Alcatraz.

This infamous rock is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the US and gives a great insight into the lives of the prisoners and guards.

The diversity of the area was highlighted on Wednesday’s trip to the Napa Valley. While temperatures by the coast in San Fran lingered in the teens, just an hour up the road saw the mercury tipping 30°C.

Groups visited local wineries to sample the local wines in stunning surroundings on the Gold Sponsor day before gathering for a BBQ lunch and time relaxing in the shade.

The major event of the conference was the Awards Gala Dinner which took place on the Thursday evening at San Francisco’s stunning Town Hall.

The formal black tie event saw everyone dress to impress and celebrate the achievers within the group and the supplier partners.

Hosted by US-based Kiwi comedian, Steve Wrigley, the evening was full of laughter, good food and wine, but wait that’s not all.

Before the band cranked into life, while the dance floor was still empty, Scott Duncan made the final announcement, inviting all to come together again for the next conference which coincides with the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Tokyo, Japan.
